Session 4 Assignment Overview
Homework for the March 9 Session
This is a full 5-6 hours of study. It is a blend of theory and application, readings, video, and audio. There is some amazing stuff here, I hope you really enjoy it! - Barrett
REQUIRED
Developmental Levels
- READ SECTIONS: "Integral Communications for Sustainability" - book chapter from Innovation, Education and Communication for Sustainable Development, by Barrett C. Brown and Chris Riedy. (24 pages.) There is some overlap with the descriptions of the levels, so skip over those if you want. What is new here are the quadrant-specific sections on communicating sustainability at the beginning, and transformative vs. translational communications (pages 1-7), the communication examples at each stage (read those), and the two good case studies at the end (pages 16-21).
- SCAN: "How to Tailor Public Communications about HIV/AIDS to Different Worldviews" - by Barrett C. Brown and Don Edward Beck. (33 pages.) There is considerable overlap between this and previous readings. However reviewing the images and examples will help you to deepen your understanding of how the levels show up in sustainability communications. Also notice how we really simplified the communication of developmental levels here, simply calling them worldviews and taking out all the technical/psychological jargon. This paper has been extremely well received and utilized within the United Nations community.
- READ: "Ego Development: Nine Levels of Increasing Embrace" by Susanne Cook- Greuter. (36 pages.) This is the best description of the ego- development stages I have seen. There is some overlap with the previous article of hers I assigned and the sections you read on ego development/self- identity, but this goes into much more depth and is highly recommended; especially the descriptions of the post- conventional stages (pages 21-28) and unitive stages (pages 28- 35). By reading these sections at the end, you will get a deeper sense of where your consciousness is now, or will develop into. Just knowing this information is psychoactive and triggers your development! This is heavy- duty developmental psychology, but really worth engaging because of the insight it will give you into yourself and those around you.
Application of Integral to Green Building
- WATCH: An Integral Approach to Green Building, in three parts, by David Johnston, Co- Director, Integral Sustainability Center. Each piece is about 15 minutes; please watch all three. Available here: integrallife.com/apply/environment/integral-approach-green-building

Big Systems Perspective on Economy, Energy and Environment
- LISTEN: "Three E’s and the New Decade of Awareness" - Interview on ZOOM'D Radio with Dr. Chris Martenson by John Schmidt, CEO Avastone Consulting (57 minutes). Very powerful insights to inform your leadership (Apologies for the advertisements in it!). Summary: Dr. Chris Martenson, author of Crash Course, fellow with Post Carbon Institute, and strategic advisor on realities of key world systems, joins ZOOM’D for continuing dialogue about economy, energy, and environment (3 E’s) in this new decade of awareness. Deeply understanding the 3 E’s and building widespread action in relation to them is central to realizing desired futures as well as dealing with a world in great transition. As we start 2010, Chris updates listeners about what is really going on with the financial system, energy, China, and the real reasons for conflict about climate change and attempts in Copenhagen to address it. This discussion with Chris continues to showcase the importance of connecting the dots on crucial issues and big systems, and it is timed to coincide with the just-completed meeting of all fellows of Post Carbon Institute, where further integration of leading-edge thought is being mobilized into clear and meaningful community action. www.voiceamerica.com/voiceamerica/vepisode.aspx
Application of Integral to International Development Issues
- READ: "Case Studies on an Integral Approach to International Development: Overview and Synthesis" by Gail Hochachka, Co-Director of Integral Without Borders. (34 pages).
- READ: At least ONE of the following case studies by Gail Hochachka, Co-Director of Integral Without Borders. These all give detailed examples of how the integral framework has been applied to advance social and environmental issues. Look through each of these and find one that attracts you and really engage it. Even if this isn't your area of work, you will certainly find insight and useful application tips in these pages. These are beautifully written.
- The Interiority of Community Resilience in the Andes of Peru Institute for Action and Progress (INAPRO) (34 pages)
- Integral Community Development in Post- war El Salvador. Centro Bartolomé de las Casas (46 pages)
- Harnessing Human Potential for True Social Change. Educate Girls Globally (40 pages)
- Personal and Economic Development as a Response to HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, a View from the Grassroots (30 pages)
